About
I am a semi-professional paleoartist and an undergraduate student studying paleontology. I currently volunteer for the paleontology collections at the University of Montana. I am also a moderator and regular on the paleoart livestream Paleostream and a team member on the Prehistoric Nature Fossil Mod for Minecraft. Outside of paleoart and paleontology, I also play music, make pixel art, and spend time with my partners. Pronouns: Any/All
What is Paleoart? Why is Paleoart Important? Why did you chose paleoart?
Paleoart is both an art, and a science. It is the reconstruction of the prehistoric world via any medium of art: which can include the plants, animals, and geologic setting of the ancient past. I am primarily a 2D digital artist who focuses on putting animals within an accurate portrayal of their environment. Paleoart acts as bridge between academics and the public. Paleoart has captivated the general public for over 150 years and allows people to learn about the field of Paleontology. It provides an overview of a paper's themes without the scientific jargon in the text itself: providing visual aide to what would otherwise be a wall of text to most. I chose to start doing paleoart on a whim. Obviously I have been interesting in prehistory for well over a decade, but in 2020 (after a long period of not engaging in paleontology) I joined social media and followed a few paleoartists that I saw. After seeing more and more on my feed, I started to draw some myself (since I've always liked drawing) This compounded to where I am today.
What is Paleostream?
Paleostream is a livestream on Twitch and server on Discord started by professional Paleoartist Joschua Knüppe. Every Friday, Saturday, and Sunday he draws illustrations for Museums, as well as his book series, #Paleostream. I am mainly help Moderate the chat on Twitch and Discord. I am also one of the council member on his speculative evolution project Lemuria: A community art challenge where we play through an alternate history of earth if India and Madagascar never separated and crashed into Asia. On that project I help plan what the continent looks like: what kind of groups would be present, the climate, and the geology. Finally, I also suggest animals to draw, and help with the research for formations for his weekly pieces that reconstruct the entire preserved ecosystem in a formation. The links to it can be found here: Discord | Twitch
What is The Prehistoric Nature Fossil Mod?
The Fossil Mod is a Minecraft Mod that add-ons to the main Prehistoric Nature Mod (which I also help on). Our goal is to produce accurate representation of fossils within the game that can hopefully allow educators to have an engaging method of introducing paleontology, as well as allowing others interested in paleontology to engage and learn from anywhere for just the cost of the game. The Discord and the mod's page can be found here: Modrinth | Discord
What do I do as a Collections Volunteer?
I am assigned a case to work on by my supervisor and then I go to work making sure each specimen is properly catalogued. For example, I update information, on our online database, create collection numbers for uncatalogued specimens, and rarely help ID a fossil. All in all, it is great work!
